Intelligent Waves is pleased to share that our own CTO and Distinguished Western Governors University (WGU) Alumni Council Member, Marqus Hutchinson, recently established a WGU scholarship to honor his mother, Tina Oden. Marqus wanted to honor his mother’s life and achievement and inspire and help WGU students. The Tina Oden Scholarship will be awarded to single mothers studying at WGU.

With the scholarship in mind, Marqus said: “My mother wants to be involved with WGU in any way she can and is very eager to help others. We’re glad to help others through her scholarship and hope all the single parents out there know that we see them and are grateful for all they do.”

Marqus’ mom raised Marqus’ two younger brothers in Alabama while he was in the Navy. She worked full-time in the Healthcare field and attended a local community college for a few years, trying to achieve her long-held dream of a college degree. As a single mother, this proved challenging. After Marqus got his degree from WGU, he encouraged his mom to consider WGU as a viable option for continuing her pursuit of a college degree. She tried it and loved the online learning environment and support WGU provided. She finally achieved her dream of obtaining a college degree in 2018. With her bachelor’s degree now achieved, Tina continued her dreams of earning an MBA degree at WGU, which she completed in 2020. She walked in the May 2022 Master’s commencement ceremony in Philadelphia with one of her other sons, Malcolm Hutchinson.

Tina remarked: “The biggest surprise was to know that a scholarship has been set-up in my name that could potentially help many wonderful and well-deserving women!  It was also amazing to celebrate 25 years of WGU and graduate with my son.”
